Serial 5 Tornado 7

For me there is a small but significant shift in gearing between 6 and 7 weight rods. With 6 and below you will be frequently making very short line fishing casts and possibly all the time. Whereas with a 7 you are more likely to be fishing mid to long distance. There are exceptions of course and both rods need to cope well in all scenarios. But if most of your 7WT time is taking shots at bonefish, redfish and banging out streamers then that is a slightly different profile to versatile close to mid range dry fly/nymph fishing.

The HT6 came about because of my twenty seasons fishing in New Zealand. I’ve spend most of my life fishing with a 6WT line, not just there but it also used to be a go to line weight for Stillwater trout. So that was all very straightforward.

The 7 on the other hand has to be a little bit more powerful for me. It still has to bend into the handle, of course, but the gearing is slightly different. That difference for me is 7 WT and above vs 6 WT and below.

It’s of no surprise that Rickard can use the HT7 for 5WT distance competition as a backup replacement for the HT10. And with MED7 I expect to cast into the mid 140s under competition.

But really, where this rod excels I believe, is with shots. I ran with it for Snakehead for about a year, fishing the 7 instead of the 8. Just to see if I could blow it up! Its final testing, as I wrote earlier, was to put it through the MCI test.

For most of my SW fishing nowadays I’d fish the 7. I suspect when we become pirates then this is the rod that will get the most use.

Cerecoil Strippers on the US builds. We spent a lot of time talking to REC before making this decision. I do have them fitted to a 9WT prototype with me in Malaysia and have found them to be very hardy.

Every rod comes with a Zoom casting meet and a 1 in 666 chance of flying the Jolly Roger with me for two weeks.

There is no 4

No.4 on Sexyloops has an interesting history. You might be bemused to discover lists on Sexyloops going 1,2,3,5. This is not an accident and goes back a considerably long way into our history.

You see back in 2002 I took the EFFF Masters test and as part of the warm-up I answered all their official questions on the Sexyloops website. Back then there was no fourth question to which I wrote there is “no question number 4, and this is surprising me too” And then promptly forgot about it.

However Tom Jindra, who was part of my MCI examination team in the USA later that year, clearly hadn’t and during that exam he asked me “On the EFFF Masters Exam what is question no.4” to which I said words to the same effect as “What the fuck are you talking about?”

Tom sadly is not with us now. He was a really top bloke. We fished together both at his home in New Orleans and in New Zealand. Something he was very proud of (apart from his  pasta sauce) was to ask me the only question in the MCI exam which I couldn’t answer :)))

So since then on Sexyloops there has been no no.4.

But then something else happened. When we launched the Hot Torpedo, about 12 years ago, I brought the first six HT rods to Malaysia to sell. No one would buy serial no4, because in Chinese the word for “four” is pronounced very similarly to the Chinese word for “death”.

(I’ve just checked with my wife and they both sound like “sei”. So there is some handy information for you).

And so consequently, I have all the serial no4 HT rods!! I’m about as superstitiious as a wooden post. Ie not all.

However I don’t have this one.  And it’s gone to Mike in North Carolina.  Enjoy, Mike! It’s a great number!!

Tornado 7 serial 3

The 9’ #7 was originally made for the MCI Masters test. I know that sounds strange, but sometimes the truth is strange! Many people have said to me that this is the best Redfish rod ever made. (Ok they like it!). It’s certainly a lightish Saltwater rod and one I would certainly take as my go-to bonefish rod.

This one is for Redfish.

Tornado 8 serial no 2

A question a normal person might ask is why is the second Tornado that Andy built an 8WT, that is now in stock, when there was a to-do builds list of ten other rods? This is an excellent question.

For some reason I thought one of our outstanding orders at the time was for an 8WT, when in fact it was for a 6WT! And while we have since build another 8WT, this was a custom-built Tornado 8 with Torzites and not the standard 8WT with Recoils that you see here now (and the equivalent of which I use for Snakehead Shots here in Malaysia).

Or maybe it was built for another reason? Maybe YOU want the second Sexyloops Tornado rod that Andy built? ALDOO02 Tornado 8. If so you know who to call!

The Tornado

Andy the Redneck is the Sexyloops rod builder in Texas. He is a custom rod builder par excellence. The blanks are the same as the Hot Torpedo/Hot Tortuga. We just thought “Tornado” was more fitting for Texas/USA!

The first 25 4/5/6 rods will be fitted with a buckeye burl spacer as our “Launch Edition”. Every rod comes with a Zoom lesson from me. We can cover anything you like. And you also have a 1 in 666 chance of winning a 2 week fishing holiday living as a pirate.

Drum roll. We will soon have finished rods in stock. Andy is full time so currently, even without the full range in stock (there is a Tornado 8 that can be shipped today), others are built and shipped within about 5-7 days.

There is nothing else like this on the market. The finest blanks that I spend ages (read: years!) getting just right, assembled by one of the world’s finest rod builders. Every rod is impeccable.
