Although you may think from studying this animated GIF that I am going to talk about drifting, I am in fact going to talk about "the slip". This is not my phrase, however since the only person who has given it a name to my knowledge is Herb Spannagl and since he called it the slip, I shall do likewise.
Yes this is a seriously nice GIF including subliminal advertising and we will be making more of it and others as this section expands.
The "slip" is where you keep the angle of the rod the same throughout the beginning of the stroke (for now let's discuss the forward stroke although it applies equally to the backstroke). Instead of turning the tip of the rod over as you come forwards, lead with the elbow and think about leading with the butt of the rod.
The Slip is accentuated with the palm upward grip I discussed a couple of days ago - it's nice how all this stuff is coming together right? (almost like I have a plan)
It is particularly important with the roll cast... this from Carl:
"I realise you'll be up to your eyes in it this week but I've a couple of
casting questions for you. After intense roll casting practice with Peer,
I've sorted out the sexiness with a jump roll but the standard roll just will not work and
although sexier that Miss Widdecombe now, is still two rungs below an Ena Sharples.
And this is after over 12 hours of practice now. It's either sexy and dies or rough
as a badgers and turns over. Can't get the power in and still keep it sexy."
That's because you need the slip Carl :-) (to be continued...)
