The world's best flyfishing site.

Newsletter 18/07/01

I've found the place: it's rocky, I can cast straight into the sea, there are fish and 400 meters away: nudist bathers. Unfortunately they are all old men. But this setback aside, I'm full of optimism, for I am going to, if not master exactly, at least partake in some saltwater fly.

So far it's been a mixed success. I've caught one fish: a dart. Dart may not be highly regarded as a sporting fish, but there can be no denying that they are indeed fish and this is an improvement on my usual experiences in the sea. And I have seen and hooked bigger fish. There was something that looked very much like a garfish, for example, that jumped on (and off) for long enough for me to realise that this could be a whole heap of fun.

Of course it's not all good news; it never is. For I have also managed to smash my flyrod. Although I usually smash at least one per season, I don't consider myself to be particularly reckless or unfortunate person. I prefer the term 'adventurous'. There was I leaping, dramatically, from rock to rock one moment, and then picking myself and the pieces up the next.

Still every cloud and all that. My brief foray with the garfish-lookalike led me to believe that the 6-weight was a tad optimistic - this and the need to cast ever bigger flies for (supposedly) ever bigger fish. So I have arranged for an 8-weight to be sent over. Let's face it, there are Tuna down there and I would dearly love to hook up with one.

The Tackleshop

Steve is working on the shopping cart. Big Paul of Kate Flemings (he's about seven foot three) is working on the product. New to the tackleshop but not yet available for online viewing is: Sage, Loop, Loomis, Lee Wulff and Cortland.

The tackleshop has now become serious.

The Experience

Karen, Sexyloops photographer, who will very shortly be making 'pic of the day' page the 'pic every three days' page we would like, is learning to flyfish. This is the inspiration for a whole new section on Sexyloops and the first instalment should be with you soon.

Lesson one has taken 13 webpages so far, so it's pretty intense stuff.

The Casting Tips

As you are probably aware I have a MPEG movie camera and I'm currently putting together pictures and videos of flycasting with the view to inserting them into the casting tips section. The casting tips are currently being rewritten as well to reflect the changes in my teaching and understanding of flycasting. This is long overdue in my opinion.

The Stillwater Section

We are about to reveal the stillwater section, piece by piece. This section once fully launched will very likely match the casting section in its depth and quality of information. Currently I'm trying to track down images of insects.

The Bulletin Board

There are some very interesting discussions here, not least the extended thread 'flycasting and visualisation'. The Sexyloops regulars appear to come from a huge variety of backgrounds and they bring this knowledge with them to the board. Some of it is quite fascinating.

Coming Soon!

As far as I can establish there is currently about 150 hours of work going into Sexyloops each week. Soon the results of this action will be seen. I know what's coming… and I'm very excited!

Best regards,
Paul
