King Bart

King Bart

It’s the end of an era. It was maybe 12 years ago when I set the British Fly Casting Club record for the 5WT at 130’6”. That record stood for a long time. A couple of years ago James beat it but I was there too and beat James and recovered my record a few minutes later. I’m not sure what the distance was - 132, 134? Anyway that’s not important because King Bart smashed it last weekend with 138’ and some inches!

Bart de Zwaan as many of you will know is the Dutch flycaster with a lovely gentle closed style that cast very pretty loops moderately far. However at the last World Championships he had the epiphany that his style wasn’t competitive because it failed to have the line speed necessary on the backcast. (Of course I had told him this very thing 10 years ago when he asked what I thought, and then proceeded to ignore my advice for a decade Tongue Out ).

Despite having Tennis Elbow, and instead of resting after the Worlds, King Bart rebuilt his stroke using the 170 style. Now this is the impressive part because after only two months he sets a new British Record while winning the 5WT event last weekend.

The only good thing I can think about this is that Bart was using the HT10 Cool

Really fantastic to see and great to catch up properly with Bart over a campfire. Congratulations Dude! 2020 should be an interesting competition year!
