There’s a saying about which flies to bring for tropical salt water fishing. A Clouser Minnow, a Lefty’s Deceiver and I can’t remember the third. I have a notion that fishing traditional streamers for trout is dwindling, just as the subtle art of the down stream, classic wet fly. I like fishing streamers and when I go off on trout fishing, whether it’s on lakes or in running water, I have some streamers with me.
I do of course have a selection to choose from, but not many and there are three that are always in the box. My Streamer Trinity, you could say. Mickey Finn, Gold Digger and Wooly Bugger. On the same note as the salt water flies I suppose you could say that there are three streamers you need for trout fishing. A Wooly Bugger and I can’t remember the other two. To specify a little on the above, streamer fishing is certainly not dwindling - lots of people still fish Wooly Buggers and the trending surge of fishing gigantic streamers for trout is growing, I think.
But the use of the traditional streamers is certainly not surging, but since I am 27 on the outside and 79 on the inside, I like using them and insist a little upon it as well.
I like the Black Nose Dace and the Black Ghost as well. As far as streamers go, this quintet (Mickey Finn, Gold Digger, Wooly Bugger, Black Nose Dace and Black Ghost) represents the ones I use. The odd pattern will make it’s way into rotation, but usually don’t stay long.
I’m heading to Sweden next week, to Hökensås, and even though I hardly need any more flies, I can always invent a need and do a little panic tying. I’ve been tying daddy Long legs, X-Caddis MK Damsels, Black Martinez and now Wooly Buggers - Wooly Bugger I do need. Over the weekend I’ll need a handful or two of Boobies (that sounds wrong) and that’ll be it. Tomorrow is the World Championships in road cycling and since that’s a 275km race, I’ll tie flies and watch that. In a short while there’ll be an explosion of tackle on the dining table as I figure out what to bring and there are lines that needs changing, leaders to be tied and much more.
I really look forward to the trip and not leat fishing the washing line techniques a little, which reminds me that I need some midge pupae as well.
Have a great weekend!
Lars
PoD: I wold have included a Mickey Finn and a Gold Digger (an old Danish pattern), but I’ve been so careless to lend out my streamer box, so I haven’t got any right now. Maybe I still won’t have any when I pick up the box at the post office. The tail on these is Craft Fur. If there’s one thing Matt Klara and I agree upon it is that CDC stinks. Matt loves marabou while I don’t - I love Craft Fur. It’s almost as soft and mobile and about 428 times stronger than marabou. See how the tails move with the little wind there was when I took this picture, Matt? Craft Fur is the business. There’s - it’s out!
