Last Friday I went to give flyfishing introduction in local school. They have so called nature class, in which they learn some outdoor activities and skills you need when doing outdoor life. After two hour lesson I jumped to check our racing reindeer as I was informed that he could have some issues.
So I went see him and he got some sticks and wires aroumd antlers. I called some help and we took those off. Saturday I woke up for call, there is reindeer with my phone number at fireplace which locates in famous hiking trail. They told that reindeer is aggressive for people. When I asked what's happening, I was told that some people try to move reindeer by crapping antlers and then reindeer start to shake head and use antlers against people. Stupidity in it's highest level, what you think reindeer would do if you challenge it for fight. Anyway we went to catch him. When we arrived he was just standing, and I took firm grip from antlers and Satu put headstalls and off we go.
Sunday we went fishing. It was really nice weather with sun, warm +20 celsius and bit windy. I checked water levels and decided to go and meet my mistress. Satu has not been often with me over there. I wonder why! :D
There was nobody on parking lot when we arrived and other car came later, so made ourselves ready fast and went to get spots. Area has two great rapids and I decided to go to the upper one. It has always been really good with lot of rocks and different kind of water. Lower part is also great but with that water level, little bit less spots to fish.
I started to fish mid and sent Satu upstream as there are nice pockets close to the shore. Mid area is little tricky as you have to cast over fast water in the area which holds slow water, countercurrent, calm water and then behind all this about 20 meter is your hotspot. Faster water which slowed down just before going on drop. And that's where the pocket is which has bigger graylings.
I fished edges of main stream first and then those waters which are before hot spot. Some times you have nice graylings on those also but now it was too low water level. Problem is that you don't really have room for back cast as you, so false casting and adjusting lenght is not really simple.
And wind was not really helping, it came from downstream and blowed flies too much upstream so I had to adjust everything, flyline would go thru countercurrent, faster water, calm water and end of fly line would again countercurrent, the clostest fast water I could pass with rod tip. I had 16 feet leader with tippet so that gave me some help.
First casts was okay but fly was not really where I wanted to be, kind of wrong but not really. Next cast was good and fish agreed, splashing rise and take, nice 40 cm grayling. Next cast I made close to me and let hotspot settle, nice 35 cm grayling just behind main stream. New cast to hot spot, rise but I couldn't hook. Next cast and nice 38 cm grayling. Then few empty casts and I changed a little how fly will go. And again nice 39 cm grayling, third one from same pocket.
Satu also caught some smaller ones from pocket and cut the line with bigger fish on rocks. We had outdoor lunch and cappuccinos. Satu fished one more pocket and got nice 35 cm grayling just before we had to leave. We had vet coming to do surgery for one of our reindeer as he had infection and maggots inside antlers. (He is doing okay now).
Mistress never fails as long you go there when she is in the mood. We had absolutely great threesome with her. My plan was meet her again this weekend but looks like heavy rain for next two days. She will be ever better after that.
Have a nice weekend and go fishing
