The Skinny

The Skinny

I’m on my way back from NY to LA and am trying to beat the FP publishing deadline on the plane. I’ve got a couple of birthdays to celebrate tomorrow. My bestie, Mauyel, is turning three tomorrow. I think I’ll have to take her down to the river to practice casting next week. She’s ready. Also my tuxedo cat, Binx, will be 17. I'm eagerly anticipating my local fishing over the next three weeks. I’m high on hopium. Maybe the algae will have browned out in the river. Maybe the carp will be thinking about getting fat rather than banging all day. Maybe the grunion will have brought stripers and halibut close to the beach. Maybe.

Always keeping in mind that I’ve got the Delaware, the North Platt, Cape Charles, and Sarasota ahead of me. Then back to Block Island (I’d keep going but would make you all jealous). I need time to practice a variety of casts with different rods, lines, and flies to be ready. And for the Block trip I want to fish some eels. I like the undulating little eely flies by guy Brian Boehm fishes for tarpon, bunny strips trailing a bulky head (of variable construction) to push some water. They undulate beautifully and, I believe, can be detected easily. We’ll see. If the locals recommend something else I’ll have to try to tie that.

Of course, this all depends on the world staying right-side up. Some critical shit is coming down right now and I think the direction and stakes will be obvious within the next two or three weeks. We’ll know whether the courts will be defied or whether the President will blink and try to find an off ramp. I could be wrong but it feels like the renditions to out of country prisons without process or recourse is the pivot point. We’ll see. If it goes wrong I’ll be cancelling some fishing plans as things could get complicated, requiring my attention.

Best of luck to everyone everywhere. I hope we all get to fish without guilt or regret wherever we want, whenever we want.
