Having not long returned from the World Fly Casting Championships in Nelijarve, Estonia, I’d like to take this opportunity to thank the organisers. The whole weekend was run very professionally with the timers, distance judges and scrutineers all doing an excellent job. The casters themselves played their part to, being ready to walk on to the platform as soon as the previous competitors had finished, thus ensuring the day ran efficiently and to time. This is in stark contrast to a typical BFCC competition where sometimes people seem surprised that they’re even in a competition when they’re called (yes, we have to call them). This sort of conversation is often had:
“XXXXX, you’re up next”
“Oh right, I’ll just finish my Mars bar and I’ll be over. What am I casting?”
“Five weight”
“Ok, I’ll just get it from the car”
I suspect if the BFCC had the same number of people turn up for one of its competitions we’d be there for a week!
There is one thing that pretty much all casting competitions have in common though; the friendliness of those who compete. Tracy and I were blown away by people’swillingness to offer advice or to lend their casting outfits for us to have a go. We’ve both come away inspired by what we saw to work harder and improve for next time.
For once we’ve got a relaxing weekend planned; some carp fishing, another crack at south coast bass (weather permitting) and some casting (of course). Have a good one whatever you’re doing.
