Next week I will be writing the website for Sungai Tiang. Currently it’s the beginning of the wet season in this part of Malaysia. As a result the river is high and dirty – and closed to fly fishing. However the Wet Season normally ends around late December or early January. At this point the river clears but continues to run high, making it very difficult or even dangerous to cross safely.
So the main season is Feb-April inclusive. This time of year has little or no rainfall, the river is low and clear and perfect for fly fishing. I know how some of you like to plan your trips in advance, usually through necessity, or just being very well organised, and so now is the time to book your spot for next year.
The Orang Asli of Sungai Tiang village own and operate the business. All fees, apart from park entry and boat transfers, go to the guides and their village community. The fishing is superb and improving year on year. It’s a remote C&R fly fishing only river, with zero public access. The scenery is untouched in this wild jungle forest reserve.
It takes half a day to reach the river from the public jetty at Banding Island and half a day to get back out again, so we recommend a week long visit so that you get five full days of fly fishing and can head up and into the remote upper reaches of the river, where the big fish live.
If you are interested in visiting you can contact me and I’ll help with the organising. Ultimately they will have to do all the organising themselves but currently they need my English Language assistance!
It’s also possible to do a combined trip. Spend some days fly fishing with me on the lake for Snakehead and Giant Gourami for one part of your trip, and fly fish for Mahseer and Jungle Perch in Sungai Tiang for the other. What a wonderful trip this will be! Fishing, fishing and more fishing!
Please get in touch if you are interested and would like to know more. All questions are very welcome. This will also allow me to create a FAQ page on their website!
Have a great day!
Cheers, Paul
