I wrote last week about setting myself a target of beating the BFCC T38 record in practice this year, as well as hopefully casting over 200ft at a competition. I managed to achieve the first part of that this week, much earlier than anticipated, when I recorded my first ever cast over 70 yards with a single handed outfit. Obviously the weather played a big part as I had a great following wind of 15-18mph, but I will say I’ve beaten my PB four times in the last month so I think I must also be improving somewhat.
Recently there’s been another virtual casting competition launched on a Facebook group. There are two categories; 5 weight with a 9ft rod and an ‘open’ single handed event. Rather than specify the SA MED line this competition is open to other lines (I’m assuming that some checks are required to ensure the line is true to the AFFTA rating). This is essentially the BFCC rules and it will be interesting to see if the dominance of the MED in distance terms is challenged at all. I did manage a big #5 cast (for me) on the same day as I was casting the T38, but unfortunately I didn’t film it so I’ll need to repeat it in order for it to count (hopefully). For the ‘open’ event I’m interested to see what tackle is used, I’ll be entering my T38 cast into this one.
Hopefully there will be some news in the next month or so regarding the BFCC casting season. If previous years calendars are anything to go by there will be at least a couple of events before the World Championships are held in August. The fact that I’m still improving my PBs, despite now being in the ‘seniors 50’ category at the BFCC, shows that it’s nevertoo late to improve. So whatever your standard, be it complete beginner or budding championship winner, look out for a BFCC event near you.
Have a great week,
