Kamchatka, the "small" last piece of Russia, is 5% bigger than Germany but in contrast to Germany there are only around 350,000 people living there. So you have already a little impression how wild that part of the world is... We fished the river Ozernaya, a gin clear river nearly in the middle of the peninsula.
Out of the small helicopter window the river looked like a big snake, winding thru the country - just beautiful.
The float trip was organized really well, 10 people, 5 guides, 1 cook, 5 rafts and a hell a lot of beer and wine.
In the upper part of the river, a lot of sockeye salmon gave the water a fancy red/green color - maybe a little bit like a x-mas tree. But I was more intrerested about the crazy colored chars behind the salmon.
Not easy to not catch a grayling while looking for something else, they're a little bit crazy, eating all what they see - but also the graylings are a lot of fun.
But after the second day I got the chum fever... The best fighters in the river and so ugly teez...
After all that chum-fun also a rod had to go... but no problem; I had some more with me.
Of course the mysterious rainbow was the challenge - topwater with the mouse! As closer as we got to the sea, the river was wider and the rainbows more frequent. Each bite was like a little heart attack, hard to wait long enough until you can set the hook.
Also some cohos came up further down, Mauro got a really nice one!
Always close to us, the bears!
If you ever have the chance to visit that place, do it - but bring a strong rod with you :)
