Jersey 2024

Jersey 2024

Tracy&James | Wednesday, 11 September 2024

The last week has been a busy time for James and I as we travelled to Jersey for our BFCC casting meeting with the hope of the opportunity to break some records and get some fishing done too. However the weather has not been kind and on the day of the casting meeting it was predicted to have thundery showers and light winds. The latter did happen resulting in very difficult conditions for the competitions yet good for the tuition; whereas thankfully the rain, thunder and lightning held off until the evening.

The event was well attended and Mike H and Mark S were kept busy with a steady stream of people to instruct including some youngsters. Due to the changeable light winds, there were no records in the competitions though Mike H showed he his still casting well, even in his 70s, as he won the #5 distance event and the accuracy event. The competition was extremely challenging and I personally found that I never had the wind in the right direction and for my #5 session, I cast into a head wind for the whole 3 minutes. The others were all quite frustrated too however it was fun to cast with the Jersey lads again as we haven't done this for two years.

As we all felt we hadn't been able to cast well, another session was arranged for the following Tuesday evening though this time the winds were over 25 mph, with the potential for 40 mph gusts, with a steady rain shower. Again the weather wasn't great for distance, due to the backcasts being stalled, but the few that cast managed to get some good distances in.

Sadly the fishing wasn't much better as Sunday started with heavy horizontal rain with strong winds that churned up the trout and carp lakes so that none of us fancied getting the rods out. We did have a lovely tour of the reservoir and carp lakes though even getting briefly out of the car, we all were quickly soaked through. The poor weather has continued for the rest of our stay however James and I have managed to tour most of the island and show my parents as much as possible including the amazing local vineyard. Hopefully next time we come back to Jersey the weather will be better and we'll have the opportunity to go fishing, perhaps catch carp as well as trout and go sea fishing too.

We will be flying back to the UK when this is posted so perhaps we'll get the chance to go fishing on the river Dee over the next week.

Whatever you are doing this week, tight-lines and enjoy,

Cheers
