How to tie... a baitfish pattern

Daniela Misteli | Sunday, 2 October 2016

I really like to fish in stillwater; pike and perch in our big lakes or seatrout fishing in the sea. If there is no current your fly can move only with your stripping moves, that gives you a chance for other patterns and materials like "river-streamers".

One of my favourite materials is craft fur, sometimes also called pseudo hair or something similar. This material is cheap, available in all colours, has a lot of movement and doesn't get heavy in the water. Here you get a step by step baitfish pattern with craft fur and a nice little trick for a round head...

What you need to tie the fly:
- of course a hook (I use the attitude extra #2 from Partridge)
- some craft fur in the colors you like
- some eyes or permanent marker
- pro sportfisher soft sonic disc in the size and color you like
- uv glue or epoxy

1. Then we start: cover your hook with thread and tie in a dubbing loop

1

2. Fill the dubbing loop with craft fur in the color you like (this will be the tail of your fly)

2

3. twist the material until it's secured on the thread

3

4. brush it back in a shape

4

5

5. tie it in - but leave appr. 5mm space behind the hook eye

6
7

6. bring it in shape again

8

9

7. add a bunch of fibers in the same colour

10

11

8. do the same with a second colour

12

9. add a third color for the gills

13

10. take a soft disc on a threader

14

11. grab the material

15

12
. put the disc behind the hook eye

17

13. get the material over the disc and secure it

18

19

14. add some eyes

20

And finish!
