fishing in Skålestrømmen - some places left and more dates added

t.z. | Friday, 29 June 2018

Bad camp cooks are okay as long you can keep them away from the food, but bad cooks who mix cans of spaghetti and chilly together in the same pan as a way of continuing to punish their mothers for something should be avoided, as this tendency may show up in non culinary areas as well. - John Gierach, Trout Bum

Oh yes, bad food is to be avoided by all means. The meals on the fishing tours I’m involved in are nothing but culunary highlights.

I´m organising a trip to one of the best troutwaters Norway, heck maybe even the planet has to offer. There are a few places left and we were able to add a second week. Read on ...

Travel

Airport - Åre-Östersund in Sweden.

It's a two hour drive from there to Skålestrømmen along a road called "fiskevägen" - the fishing route. So there are some good opportunities to explore some Swedish waters too, should you tired of catching trout after trout. Let us know before if that's an option for you so we can gather information about current conditions.

Travel from Åre-Östersund to Skålestrømmen

  • by bus - http://ltr.se/din-resa/tidtabeller/linje-153/ to Valsjöbyn on the Swedish side. We'll pick you up there.
  • by rental car - which gives you more flexibility around the area. We'll do our best to coordinate the group via facebook so you can discuss car-sharing long in advance.
  • There might be a pickup for max 4 people in Østersund on Sunday by 12:00
  • Travelling back is easier as we can get you to Östersund airport in our cars.

tip: That weekend is a huge open air festival in Östersund - check http://yran.se - Maybe you want to throw a bit of culture into the mix and fly to Östersund already on Friday afternoon.

Airport - Trondheim Værnes

It is a 5 hour scenic drive from Trondheim Værnes to Skålestrømmen. Especially the part from Grong to Skålestrømmen is very beautiful. However, there is less fishing on this part of the route than on the Swedish side.

Travel from Trondheim Værnes to Skålestrømmen

  • By train and bus. Take the train to Grong and then the bus from Grong to Sørli. We pick you up at the bus-stop.
  • by rental car - which gives you more flexibility around the area. We'll do our best to coordinate the group via facebook so you can discuss car-sharing long in advance.
  • There might be a pickup for max 4 people in Grong on Sunday by 12:00.

fishing license area - 4km of private, undisturbed fishing

The fishing - a day at Skålestrømmen

Boats are freely available I think we should have 3 at least, if not 4. I will bring bellyboats too.So getting up, having a coffee while watching the fish rise and trying to map out the few bigger ones, get there - invite some fish for lunch and come back is a thing one does from around 10 to 12, then hang out, tie some flies. Do some casting maybe, take the car to the little village or around the area.

"Slapp av” is the motto. It translates to "relax" but has a much deeper meaning for us Norsemen. You need to "slapp av" when it feels like the shoulders are hung up in height with the ears, when the tasks grow over your head and trivial problems seem prohibitive.

In between 22:00 and 23:00 we pack the boats and go up the strømmen which is 4km privat fishing. One can of course do that during the day as well. Then we light a big fire by the "strømmen", a fast water part in running into Skålestrømmen. The fish congregate in the hard water during the night. Food inform of 8 different species of mayflies and several caddis species is literally washed into their open mouthes. We have tried to count the rising fish but it is impossible.

I tried counting once but it wasn’t possible. It can be 200 fish all at once depending on the water, but i’s always at least 50 or more. It's an insane place and can make a tough man cry when these feeding fish become hard to catch. It took me a whole night to crack the code, and then the f.... code changed. It's crazy and a lot of fun.

But we'll work as a team and help each other. That's the beauty of such a high abundance of fish.

Fishing is good until 3 in the morning. Konstanse had her first 3 pounder one night around 2 when drifting back to the hut - alone — still something sitting very deep in her memory. It’s fun drifting there as the moose and maybe a bear watches you. You see the moose but not the bear ;-). You just see the beaver swimming around … and rises, rises and some more rises.

Food

  • We'll prepare breakfast, lunch and dinner together. Family style. This means we can of course take your dietary requirements into account. Vegetarian and especially vegan can be a challenge in this part of the world. However your guide/host Thomas is almost a vegetarian but he enjoys the fish from our waters. They are natural. No stocked fish, just an immense abundance of trout and arctic char in the lakes and streams around. So we will prepare your catch, or show you how to best do it. We will smoke, grill and even do "gravad" trout and char.
  • We will also arrange two dinners with meat from local  game. Lierne is one of the richest hunting areas in Scandinavia and we will serve a proper "elggryte" on the laste evening. You'll love it.
  • We'll cook a lot on the open fire.

Other activities

  • Moose safari - we'll head out one evening into the nearby woods and search some moose. There are plenty and we can almost guarantee to see them.
  • Fishing in Sweden. The road from Krokom to Grong is called "fiskevägen" - the fishing route. So there are some good opportunities to explore some Swedish waters too, should you tired of catching trout after trout. Let us know before if that's an option for you so we can gather information about the current conditions.
  • For those believing in that fishing is a competitive sport there is a fishing competition in Lierne on the 28th. Pretty everything apart from nets and explosives is allowed. Feel free to join the fun, we stay way.
  • Same weekend is also a  farmers marked in Lierne. Beware of the for mainland europeans hefty entrance fee.
  • That weekend is a huge open air festival in Östersund - check http://yran.se - Maybe you want to throw a bit of culture into the mix and fly to Östersund already on Friday afternoon.
  • Fly Fishing Fun Festival at Skålestrømmen on Sunday the 29th. We do this every year and the event is a cozy gathering of the locals and our guests. It's very informal event around large campfire, good food, good stories and even better lies about fish sizes. ;-) We have casting presentations, fly tying and everybody learns from everybody. Nothing pretentious or competitive about this event at all. ... and admission is free.

Optional extras

  • should you be a total flyfishing novice a beginners class can be arranged for a fee of 100 kr. This a full days 1:1 casting, guiding and fishing together
  • rental of waders - we have a few extra waders which can be rented for 150 kr. per day.
  • There will be Lawson Blue Ridge tent/hammocksavailable to rent and buy, should you plan longer stint into the mountains. 300kr. per day
  • The fishing license for the surrounding waters can be obtained in the nearest shop in Sørli - a "viking mile" away.
  • You may use spin-gear should you not want to learn flyfishing but your spouse has booked the trip and drags you along. This can be rented for 150kr. a day or you just buy a simple kit at the shop in Valsjøbyn.

What to bring

  • Fishing gear - a 8 to 9 ft fly rod for a 4 or 5 wt. line is sufficient. A 6wt can be over-gunned as delicate presentation is often required. You mostly need a floating line.
  • 9ft to 12ft leaders, tippet material (0.16 is ideal) - bring enough. There are no fly shops around.
  • a fishing net, ideally knotless
  • Please, flies on barbless hooks. We hate to operate barbed hooks out of our guests.
  • It's good idea to bring a sleeping bag. Basic linnen is supplied, but we do nothave sleeping bags for rent, so should you feel like taking an overnighter in the mountains.
  • Bring clothes for all weather. It might be cold at night.
  • Wellies for the boat.
  • Waders and wading jacket against the cold breeze.
  • Insect repellant ... well, we found that our mozzies here just laugh about the schtuff you get in your countries. - read this article here for more information. http://www.sexyloops.com/index.php/ps/dont-panic-its-only-mozzies

Nearby

  • Valsjöbyn on the Swedish side is about 10 km (be careful - the Vikings call this a mile - so do not get fooled by that) from Skålestrømmen. There is a little shop which has everything, including adult beverages. Everything more fun than beer has to be pre ordered though. Alcohol is cheaper in Sweden. The shop is open Sundays too.
  • Sørli is a viking mile the other direction. Gas station and shop there too. No booze though.

Anything else? Just ask ....

Last but not least - booking

Booking is handled by yours truely, just send him an email to zullich@me.com
