Cold Comfort

Cold Comfort

David Siskind | Sunday, 12 October 2025

My head is full of noise and news - always (I’ll keep my complaint brief - see below). My meditation practice is on the ropes. I have had a cold for the last week and it sapped my motivation to do much of anything. But I have been getting out to the park to cast with my HT10 in preparation for redfish next week. I had ordered a new SA WF9F Redfish Warm and instead received a SA WF9F Infinity. It could have been my error but was certainly serendipitous. I love it. The Infinity has a long belly. I feel like it gives me the ability to carry more line improving accuracy beyond 40 feet. It’s a half size heavy and the WF9 works beautifully with my HT10. While it’s not listed for the salt, I can’t imagine why? Buoyancy - who cares? Would ride high. I can’t imagine a corrosive attack on the coating. We’ll see if it gets too flexible or sticky at 80 deg. F. I bet it will be fine. In any case I’m bringing my HT8 as well paired with a WF8F Bonefish taper, which I know will perform nicely in the Delta. Brian Boehm has plenty of stuff should mine be less than optimal. It would be super if I could successfully use the equipment I’ve been practicing with.

My pal Marty is meeting me there. I don’t usually like to share a flats skiff with another angler (too greedy for shots) but he’s a special case. We’ve fished together A LOT since 1968 and I can’t think of anyone more organically compatible as a fishing partner. We’ve often comfortably cast to rising fish wading no more than 10 feet apart.  This will be his return to fishing for bull reds after a 10 year hiatus. The last time out ended in a disastrous boating accident before it started and he deserves another crack at these plentiful, large, not-too-bright fish. I know we’ll have a blast.

About the news...This really can’t be ignored.

The regime plan has become clear:

  1. Deploy ICE into Blue Cities
  2. Exaggarate Scale of Resulting Protests
  3. Deploy National Guard Troops to Inflame Protests
  4. Invoke Insurrection Act - Martial Law

These guys are all in. They’re accusing the loyal opposition of terrorism, and protestors of insurrection  Institutions with something to lose have almost all made the calculation that obedience is better than victimhood, cooperation preferred to battle. Smug tech execs are extolling the virtues of strong-man rule. The Republicans will not accept election losses without violence. And yet life goes on around me despite the closure of the Federal Government. Kids are back in school. I can still get a covid vax. The shelves at Ralphs are still full of produce, eggs, and meat, albeit at high prices. It all just feels like a house of cards. Nobody likes this but few if any know what to do. I hope big crowds show up for “No Kings.” I’ll be in the middle of nowhere fishing.
