Our week has been taken up with casting practice for this weekend’s World Championships in Millom, Cumbria. By the time this FP is posted we should be on our way up north, no doubt stuck in a traffic jam on the M6 somewhere. I’m not sure either of us is going to be that competitive (given our poor form in practice) however we’re both looking forward to a great weekend, hooking up with a lot of old friends and getting to meet some we know through Facebook etc. for the first time.

Luckily we’ve had a real mix of conditions this week which has allowed us to bottom out which outfits we’re using for each event, given any particular wind.  Today, however, was too windy for us to get anything to work, hopefully the wind won’t be quite so strong in Cumbria (35mph plus) – if it is I might have to take a pair of scissors to our shooting heads in order to shorten them.

We broke up our practice with a day on the Welsh Dee earlier in the week, as with today’s casting the weather wasn’t ideal for this but we persevered and caught some fish, mostly grayling on the dry fly.  Unfortunately Tracy lost a PB grayling that was putting up a great fight – a big male fish that was using its huge dorsal fin to good effect in the current.  It managed to spit the hook just as Tracy was getting the upper hand – hopefully she’ll have better luck next time.

Being as I’ve still got some final tackle preparation to do – new tapered leaders on everything, line cleaning etc. I’m going to leave this FP here, other than to say good luck to all the competitors - I hope you all have a great weekend regardless of the results.

See you in Millom,

James.

PS – all the fishing photos are of me as Tracy always has the camera.
