The casting competitions are coming round thick and fast at the moment; last weekend was the BFCC event at Alconbury and in a couple of weeks there is the Game Fair. Then in August there’s the big one – the World Championships in Millom, Cumbria.
I can’t say that either Tracy’s or my preparations for these events is going well, Tracy because of injury – a mild case of tennis elbow which originated from carp fishing i.e. fighting big fish and repetitively flinging dog biscuits, and for me – well I’m just not casting that great.
Whether that’s because I don’t have the suppleness I once did, I don’t know. I do know that when I’m struggling to achieve the distances I think I should be getting on any given day I have a natural tendency to start over-powering in an effort to compensate, and most distance casters will agree that’s the road to frustration.
That said, I did ok last weekend, winning the #5, #7, ST27 and accuracy events, however if JT had been able to stick around for the afternoon I suspect it would have been a different story – he won all the morning events; the S55g, T38 and T120.
At the Game Fair we’ll be contesting championships in the #5, ST27, S55g and 16ft Spey events (from a platform). Qualifying will run all weekend, culminating in the finals on Sunday afternoon. There will also be an accuracy championship where the best score over the three days of competition wins and a daily trout distance competition with a #7 outfit. With all that going on the BFCC volunteers are going to have to work hard – I’m pretty sure we’re all going to be very thirsty at the end of the day! I think most of us cast better with hangovers so hopefully that won’t be a problem (it certainly stops me from putting too much effort in).
