Such a strange year

Such a strange year

And no, I’m not talking about politics. Instead I’m talking about the weather. When I first came to Malaysia the seasons were very defined; the Wet Season would run from the beginning of November through to mid January, then it would immediately turn into the dry season, as if someone had pressed a switch.

From mid Jan through to sometime in April it would not rain a single drop. The jungle would die back and turn tinder dry, there would be numerous small forest fires. The weather would get hot; 36-38C (it’s normally 30-33C) The lake temp could be as much as 34 or 35C at the surface layers. Then the Dry would break, and every third or fourth day we would have a short but violent 1 hour thunderstorm, slowly building into the Wet proper by late October.

This current “Dry Season” the lake level is still rising. The water temp is only 31C. It has been raining every afternoon and evening. It’s been like this for a few years now but every Dry Season becomes gradually wetter.

I just saw a post on FB (a platform I can’t stand by the way!) saying that climate change was a hoax. WTF? Anyone who lives indoors or doesn’t travel maybe doesn’t see it. But I see it everywhere I live. You really have to be living with your head in the sand to believe something like that.

When I first arrived in Hungary some 20 years ago, they had snow on the ground from early November through to mid April. Now they might have a week of snow all winter. The last time I was there in December it was 20C!! It should have been below freezing.

Anyway, you just need to look at the retreat of the glaciers and the loss of ice on the poles to see the transformation.

In terms of fishing, I don’t know what impacts the continual wet will have here. On the lake there are still fresh snakehead babies appearing and the lake is at its highest level in a long time. The rivers unfortunately are currently dirty. In terms of the planet I think we’re f’ked.

James’ hand is f’ked too by the way. He fell while fishing and protecting his rods his hand took a bash. So he’s off to hospital on another island. I hope you get some great treatment James and it doesn’t affect your trip too much.

I’m off to KL so Ashly can get a swimming lesson and so I can buy a new iPhone. My current one is over three years old and if I hang around too long I think they may become rather more expensive than they currently are. Most of Sexyloops is run through my phone!

Have a great week. And if you have any questions about fishing or flycasting, the best place to ask is the Board.
