I took advantage od the mild December weather yesterday and spent the afternoon on the coast. It was mild, not too much wind, water temperatures were 3-5 degrees and I caught the turn of the tide. All in all - near perfect conditions for winter fishing. On the first spot two (or maybe one twice) sea trout turned just under the rod tip, on the second I had an ever so gentle tightening, and on the third, another guy caught a small sea trout.
The evening before, as I was packing the gear, an old fly I used to use a lot popped into my head. The Djihad by Danish sea trout angler, Steen Larsen. The Djihad is a simple fly, but one that fished well in almost all conditions.
I left the packing and went straight to the vise to tie a few. I actually forgot it again when fishing, and just remembered it in the last half hour before dusk, but I quickly tied one on, just to make sure I gave it a chance, and to photograph if for today’s page. The photo’s not the best as it was getting dark, but you get the idea, I’m sure.
As I said, a simple fly that does however require that you manage proportions well in order for it to look good.
Hook: Ahrex FW 580, #4-8.
Tail: Fibres from Golden Pheasant breast feather, and a few flash fibres.
Rear body: Flat silver tinsel, and a small bump of orange Seal’s Fur (from my mates at Theft and Kjaer).
1st hackle: Orange dyed cock hackle.
Front body: Flat silver tinsel, and a small bump of black Seal’s Fur (from my mates at Theft and Kjaer).
Front hackle: Black dyed cock hackle.
And that’s it. I’m quite certain this fly would do well in almost any environment (stillwater, river, salt etc), and I’ve tied no less than 12 this morning (4 of each in sizes 4, 6 and 8).
The earliest reference I have for it is in a book from 1994, so it’s definitely older than that. I’ll ask the Steen Larsen is he remembers when it was created.
I look forward to using is some more in the coming months.
Have a great weekend,
