Close call

Close call

Mika Lappalainen | Friday, 6 June 2025

Last Friday I went to our lake and had short session with success. Lost one from strike, other one I lost after fight few moments before landing. Then I found right one and there was no doubt about take, I landed nice rainbow trout.

Monday I went to fix fences, I had small accident as gas stapler slipped from pole and I shot 40 mm staple to my left hand. I notice the hit, yet it was not bleeding as 2 years ago when I hit my finger with similar stapler, so I thought that it was just a scratch. I continued working and then felt some bleeding. I went to car to clean wound and put some band-aid.

Bleeding stopped and I worked rest of the day and finished fence with others. In the evening some pain came and I couldn't really move my middle finger without huge pain. I took painkillers and went to bed, just to wake up during night with insane pain on my left hand.

I could hardly move my fingers and midfinger was cold. I tested skin and I did have feeling so it was not numb, that's good sign. Then tested bones and I couldn't be sure it there was fracture or was pain from nerve or joint. I massaged hand and pain relief, enough to fall sleep again.

Tuesday morning pain was back, no strength to keep phone or coffee cup.  I got doctor appointment and got kind of relieving news. No point for x-ray as won't have broken bone or fracture. Problem was huge inner blood bleed, that's why it didn't bleed out as everything stayed inside. Blood made hand swell, prevented movements and caused pain.

I had antibiotics as doctor was worried about infections and as hand has plenty of nerves etc, he said that better play safe than wait what happens.

Wednesday I had guiding day and hand got even bigger, I couldn't see knuckles. Guiding went perfectly as we started with casting training at field before going to river. Guest got few okay graylings, so it was nice day. During the day hand started to get little better without pain anymore.

Thursday morning I had knuckles again, movements were still difficult and some pain yet not so much that I couldn't hold line and do casting, I had short session as warm up while waiting fishing guests to arrive. We had nice day at lake and they caught rainbow trouts which I filleted for them so they could cook dinner.

Friday morning doctor will check hand as I already know that it was just close call. After that I have to spread fertilizer on fields and then it will be fishing two days as our friend came from Sweden to visit and fish here. I haven't decide rivers yet and that will be difficult decision, so many options.

Another close call will be that I probably don't remember on Friday that it is our wedding anniversary, as things will take me. So happy anniversary my dear wife, it is heaven and hell :-x
