Casting meeting in southern Sweden

Casting meeting in southern Sweden

Rickard Gustafsson | Saturday, 27 September 2025

This week not much casting or anything has been done. I’ve spent most of the week in bed since I have caught covid or something. Fever, tired and muscle aches. But last Saturday was better!

Last Saturday I drove down to Tyringe, a small town in southern Sweden to take part in a meeting we arranged for DPK, The Perfect Cast. I didn’t know what to expect for this meeting as it was the first one we arranged and only three persons had signed up. So I know it would be me and one more organiser and hopefully some more people.
When I arrived there were already more people there than had signed up. Accuracy targets was already setup and tape measurement with some distance markers was also setup. The sun was shining and it was warm like summer. That’s a good start of the day!

It was a motley crowd of people there from total beginners to experienced casters. That was really great to see. One guy had never touched a fly rod before and went away with a fishable cast after that day, he even participated in the beginner accuracy competition we arranged! We scaled down the accuracy to two rounds and start with the line off the reel. And we let the beginners compete without those who had competed before. I think that was a good idea.

We gave the more experienced casters some tips how they could improve their casting and if they continue to show up to meetings I think they can become really good.

After the accuracy competition, grilling some hotdogs and prize giving ceremony the crowd started to thin out a bit since there was some other big event going on in the small city that day. But we were still a number of persons left that wanted to cast a bit more. We casted different equipments and talked about fly casting. We got an introduction spinning precision Arenberg, which was more fun than I expected it to be. I’m on a dangerous path here, all of the events I have tried in casting sport has been fun. But I don’t have endless time for practice.

One setup we did spend a lot of time on was something I had brought along if there would show up any kids that wanted to try fly casting. An Echo Gecko 7’ 9” rod with a cheap DT line.

But this soft little rod is fun to cast. And it is a very good teacher for distance casting. To carry a lot of line and cast far with this rod you really have to delay power application and use lots of rotation.

I also got invited to visit Stenbiten Jakt & Fiskecenter, a beautiful system of ponds and a virtual stream stocked with brown and rainbow trouts. A very nice place that I plan to visit for fishing in the future. Very well kept and with very high quality fish. I got to fish a bit and did catch a big brown trout. Perfect fins, looked like a wild fish. And there is much bigger fish there than the one I did catch.

All in all it was a great day and I got the idea how we should arrange our meetings and grow our club in the future. I have tried to explain the concept of the meetings of the BFCC and that what’s we need to focus on and now things can start to happen.

Cheers, Rickard
