Apple Mapstakes

It’s been an interesting week since last time. Last Saturday was spent nervous waiting for a message from Karel as he was doing his CI assessment then. I knew he was ready as I’ve seen his journey and the four hour pretest Paul and I did for Karel the Sunday before the event.

I’m very happy to been part of Karels’ journey to his CI and was soo happy when he passed. Well deserved Karel! Thank you for letting me be part of your journey!

This week we have rented a cargo container. Or more correct a tiny house built in a cargo container. Right next to a lake. The fishing in the lake hasn’t been much to talk about but in the area there is more exciting fishing to be found. Both from foot and via car. The car part can be discussed though…

The week has been changing to say the least. From very hot weather with sun to very windy with rain. It was quite the experience sitting in the container looking out over the lake, the lake is just a few meters from the container, and see a storm roll in. We could see the storm coming on the lake. The water was calm and the storm came rolling in and we could actually see how far it had reached. I’ve never seen a storm coming in this closely before. From nothing tho full on.

During the days with bad weather I’ve been studying the maps to find locations to visit. Or at least so I thought. I found a road that lead to a place that offered parking nearby the river. Or is I thought as that what was Apple Maps told me. But now I’ve learned.

We started to drive to the spot for parking. The road went from asphalt to gravel. Nothing uncommon in these areas. But the road kept getting smaller and the gravel more coarse so to say. And then there suddenly was markings for snowmobile trail along the ”road”. But Apple Maps was adamant that this was the way so we kept going. Hoping for the best.

Until it wasn’t reasonable to keep going by a regular car. Maybe a 4x4 if it was small could do the job. So I stopped the car and went to check the bridge over the river that would take us to ”the parking spot”.

Well the bridge was fit for walking. Possibly a snowmobile if the driver is small. The bridge is a hanging bridge. So I had to admit. Apple Maps was wrong. Checking Google Maps I got the truth. There was no road there.

Do I decided it was time to go back. So it was just to put the car in reverse. Have Minna hop out and check the road for big stones to avoid. It went well for a while until the car started to overheat. Nothing else to do than to stop and let the car cool down.

At least I could go back to fish a bit while we waited for the car to cool down a bit.

Fishing was not the same when you are worried that you will get out. But the car cooled down enough for us to give it a go on reversing a couple hundred meters more to get to a spot where we could turn the car around. We almost got there before the car overheat again. So an other round of waiting, not fishing. But this time we managed to get out to a reasonable road before anything else happened.

So I would like to call this mistake an Apple Mapstake.

And I didn’t have to stop spotting new fishing locations. I just didn’t find any. The spots didn’t match my imagination. A deep river without possibility to wade with meter high walls isn’t very fun.

I had an other interesting episode on the way to the cabin while stopping to get food and drink. In the liquor store, Systembolaget, there were some guys having a bit of problem with the selection of lager beer above 7%. I didn’t think you bought that kind of beer for the taste or that there even was a difference for those lagers.

Cheers, Rickard
