Fly Fishing In Winter

Fly Fishing In Winter

Bernd Ziesche | Wednesday, 6 January 2016

Right now we are having -4 to MINUS EIGHT degrees Celsius in Northern Germany. Paul doesn't think it's possibly to fly fish under such frosty conditions - maybe he's right?! Anyway we didn't care and so Marina and I have been out enjoying the winter all week long.

We have been fly fishing for asp and pike perch as well as fly casting on grass. What I personally really like about fishing in such cold conditions is that most of the time I am the only one (besides Marina) out on the water. And then it really gets EXTRA calm. Many movements will be slowed down in winter time. I especially love to fish during the night in this time of year. Yes, it can get freakin cold - that's for sure! But in no time during the whole year I feel to be that close to the fish. The best thing about the cold weather really is, that even without hooking up with a proper fish you will always have a serious fight - the one with yourself... ;). Sometimes when I win this fight (and fish little longer) I manage to hook up with a fantastic fish. It's those fish keeping me warm for several nights usually.
When fishing for pike perch winter is the best time of the year in order to catch a big one. Of course big ones never come in many and though  we did not yet get the one we are hoping for. But you already know it needs much more than minus eight degrees to keep us out of the spot. So let's see what this week will bring to us!?
Nice week to all of you!
All my best
Bernd
