Here Bhuddachu hooks up to a nice fish with his ZXL 590. The initial second or so of the hookup is, for me, the most dangerous. That's when things go pop. Si always gets that rod way up in the air on the hookup, so there's lots of give. I'm not sure what tippet he's using here, but that softish rod is the right thing for these situations.
