Ronan's report

Monday October 4th, 2010

Not fishing Eric, or fighting off crocodiles; testing and teaching over 3 days in Brisbane. Myself and Brian Henderson had a very successful weekend. We had a pretty remarkable pass rate of 5 out of 6 CCI candidates. Brian was at the Yellowstone conclave this year and got to participate in and observe plenty of testing that resulted in a lot of failures. I was concerned that we were not being tough enough but Brian assured me we were and that a couple of the guys we were testing were better prepared than he had seen in several MCI candidates in Montana. One of the new CCI's, Michael Kan, a young doctor, commented to us afterwards that his CCI test was more arduous, thorough, and stressful than most of his medical exams. One candidate who had failed in the past, we pushed to MCI testing level several times with some of our questioning and he never blinked. Another candidate, Ward Nicholas had a 3,000 kilometre round trip to do his test, now that's dedication.

Earlier this year we also tested a bunch of CCI candidates down in Tasmania at Peter Hayes' venue, Paul was one of the examiners. Everyone passed as well, as I recall that was 5 out of 5.

On a recent straw poll of what caused such poor results from testing at the Montana Conclave it seems many are going into these events with a suck it and see attitude, and are woefully under prepared. I know I did the first time I sat my MCI a few years ago, and it was a real shake up. Under the intense scrutiny of Lasse and Chuck Easterling, I was soon looking for a rock to hide under. Up until then I'd cast and taught pretty much in isolation with little input from others. That all changed very promptly and soon I couldn't get enough of the company of those who had gone down that road before.

What we seem to have going in Oz is a very strong mentoring system. CCIs who plan on eventually sitting for their Masters realise that the best students they can have are CCI candidates so they very actively seek them out and put in many hours with them, teaching, grilling and testing from every angle, it's a win for everyone, and the results show. You just can't get too much mentoring in this game.

If you are a CCI or MCI candidate do whatever it takes to spend as much time as possible with other casters - discussing, learning, questioning and teaching. We have a big testing event coming up in Melbourne this week, Bill Higashi is coming from Japan as a representative of the Board of Governors - if we get the same kind of results we've had lately we're going to end up with more instructors in Australia than we have fishermen...

Weekend Bash!

Just finished this weekend's Hungary Meet here at Latohead. We had Mark Stoats and Trevor over - we fished Bosnia last week - as well as an attendee from Austria (Bonamy) and Croatian instructor friends. We played the Danish Games, which were in fact far more complicated that they're supposed to be because of obstructions, hang-overs and Mark's mosquitoes. Many photos to add to the Blog later today but now I'm going to catch up on some much needed rest! More follows...

Cheers, Paul
