Home science

I have seen few times past week how people use nitrile gloves when handling a fish. Those posts have pop up on my facebook in certain fly fishing group. I just don't know or understand why use those. Of course if you are badly allergic to fish then it is okay, otherwise I don't see the point.

Earlier there were lot of post where you could see people using some kind of fishing gloves or scarf when holding fish. I'm happy that those are not so much use anymore, or at least I don't see them.

Now I'm talking about more like fresh and cold water fishery, like trout, grayling, pike, perch, salmon etc. Gloves will always harm fish mucus, and when that is done, fish can get some diseases.

So I did some home science because I wanted to check if nitrile glove does have advantage comparing bare hand. I even got Satu to be part of this science.

Test was that I twist Satu's arm. Just like when you do prank and twist other person's arm so skin will go red, it's kind of burning.

So I did it with nitrile gloves, I had to squeeze more to have grip, sounds good there are less friction, but if it is fish and you need squeeze more to have grip... well bye bye viscera.

Same with bare hand, well we all know how that end up. Then I did it with wet hands, it was kind of similar with gloves but I didn't have to squeeze so hard, and I had better touch.

Then I made paper test also, to see if there are differences between gloves and bare hand, both of course wet. My bare hand holds moisture better than a nitrile glove one, who would ever thought. :D  Now someone is thinking that it means that scarf or normal glove will hold even more moisture, true and also it is taking mucus off from fish. We all know how important mucus is for fish so let it be.

If someone has better understanding and knowledge why to use gloves when handling a fish, please tell. Or is it only marketing thing to sell some shitty things to fisherman. If I understood right sharks and some species are different story probably.

This what happens when you have bad flu and you can barely do talking... bad home science.

Have a nice weekend and go fishing
