Drills and Exercises

Drills and Exercises

Paul Arden | Tuesday, 7 February 2023

For a while now I’ve been planning to upload a series of videos on training drills and exercises. There is an interesting distinction between these two things, despite us often appear to use the terms somewhat interchangeably. I think of a drill as being a task set to hone a specific movement or series of movements. Whereas I think of an exercise as a training game used to develop and hone actual fishing casts. But that’s just me and it will be interesting to see what other instructors /coaches think. I’m certainly open to suggestions and the Internet often produces a wide variety of usually conflicting answers to this question!

This week I will upload the first of these. I would have uploaded today but it was raining yesterday and today I’m having my truck serviced, while also returning a boat trailer. So I haven’t been able to film the first and only planned it in my mind. But I’m sure when I get into this I’ll be able to knock them out quite quickly. I plan to keep them fairly short and to the point.

I have two reasons for doing this incidentally.  One is for my Zoom students; I set drills and exercises every week for my students, and often these are the same or similar exercises – no surprises there perhaps and it would be useful to be able to offer a link after the lesson. I must have 50, perhaps even 100 or more of these drills and exercises, that I use both for myself and my students. This information is largely not available on the Internet. In fact I can’t recall seeing this information anywhere before. So it’s a great think to add to the Fly Casting Video Manual.

Lots of excellent coaching discussions on the Board at the moment. It will be interesting to see how these drills and exercises fit into the things we are discussing.

In case you missed it on Saturday I mentioned the fact that we will be having a Sexyloops 25 meet in September this year. Email or WhatsApp me please if you are planning or are interested in attending.
