demons and lagopus

t.z. - Thursday, July 30, 2015

Last summer I concentrated on the Børgefjell and Lierne area in the southern part of northern Norway. I have been fishing there for a while and finally had a chance to spend several weeks. Living and fishing up there feels like «a hundred years ago».

On Fire

Bernd Ziesche - Wednesday, July 29, 2015

Many years ago the editor of the former German fly fishing magazine „Der Fliegenfischer“ published a photo presenting a fly fisherman lying pretty relaxed on the river bank watching a HUGE fish splashing right in the middle of the river. The editor asked what one would see in this picture? Back then I was 20 years old and replied to see a fly fisherman who obviously lost his fire!

Casting Progress

Glenda - Tuesday, July 28, 2015

My casting progress is not going as well as I had hoped. I am frustrated and feeling useless especially when it comes to the double haul.

Rumble in the Jungle Week

Paul Arden - Monday, July 27, 2015

This week, to celebrate my successful return to the Jungle and the subsequent capture of a sizeable Snakehead and Jungle Perch, I am running the Sexyloops "Rumble in the Jumble" Week: buy any Hot Torpedo fly rod, and receive absolutely free, one Thunderbolt Flyline of your choice AND a Sexyloops Stealth Master camouflage cap. This is a really fantastic offer, worthy of another magnificent Snakehead, and so if you're thinking about buying the best flyrod in the world, or even if you're not, then this is the time to do so! Just order as per normal and in the notes let us know which flyline you'd like - or drop me an email. (Sexyloops flylines are only currently available in 5 and 6 weights. This fantastic Rumble in the Jungle offer is available for one week!)

Scott Loudon - Sunday, July 26, 2015

There's been a bit of talk this week from Bernd and Lars about fishing at dusk and through into the night time. What's really interesting reading there FPs is that they've arrived at similar conclusions whilst going against the general consensus. Note - fish fast! All the talk of night time has reminded me of just how much I enjoy that magical hour just before dark and then the hour or two following.

The Dark Night

Bernd Ziesche - Wednesday, July 22, 2015

Right now in (European) SUMMER time a lot of fly fishermen love to fish the dark night. The dark night to me is everything AFTER dusk and BEFORE dawn. Many fly fishermen believe in black flies during night fishing. I don’t!

Books about Fly Fishing

Glenda - Tuesday, July 21, 2015

I used to collect books about trout fishing. In most cases I would go to the book signings and have the author sign my book.

The Hot Torpedo

Paul Arden - Monday, July 20, 2015

I'm now back in the Malaysian Jungle, camping out in the boat with Ash, fishing for Snakehead and everything else I can hook. I'm considering a different business strategy for Sexyloops equipment; I'm getting quite a few requests now from shops to stock the rods. The problem is that I've cleverly managed to produce the most expensive rod on the planet, no expense spared, particularly so since we moved production to England - the build quality is higher and it takes significantly longer to build each rod, because they are now immaculate, but still... And of course I'm working on a shop margin or less as it is, so if I do sell through shops, I can either fit less expensive components (I'm not going to do this!), shift production somewhere else (I'm not going to do this either!) or have a price jump so that I can get paid too (contrary to popular rumour, I'm not related to Elizabeth Arden, don't have Royal Blood and I'm not a bank robber, so if I don't sell rods then I have to either catch fish or go hungry!). But there are significant advantages to retailing through shops, not least because I'm not thrilled with marketing and would rather fish instead). So that's what's now being planned!

This week

Scott Loudon - Sunday, July 19, 2015

What a horrible week, 12 hour + days, no wind and limited time to actually do anything fly fishing related.

Night fishing

Viking Lars - Saturday, July 18, 2015

When you hit it right, there's a certain rythm to a night on the reef, fishing for sea trout.

Don´t panic - it´s only mozzies.

t.z. - Thursday, July 16, 2015

Trout and similar feed on insects - fly fishers make use of this behaviour. So the presence of insects are a good thing - mostly. However, due to unknown reason som of these insects do feed on blood. I assume on all sort s of blood - but I am pretty sure they feed on my blood. The fact that the suck my blood sucks … really.

Fly fishing for serious carp

Bernd Ziesche - Wednesday, July 15, 2015

During the past week Marina and I still have been fly fishing for carp. Having caught a fair number of carps on fly during the past decade my mission was to catch a serious big one this summer. Heavy target for a fly fisherman of course!

Glenda - Tuesday, July 14, 2015

Hi everyone Due to my hospitalisation, I have nothing to write about this week. Medication and treatment is really messing with my brain. But promise to be back next week with another of my boring posts. Happy fishing.

Heading to the Jungle

Paul Arden - Monday, July 13, 2015

It's my last few days here in Hungary and I'm frantically packing, and fishing of course. Let's see, today I visit my boat on the Balaton to pick up my mobile solar panel and negotiate some sort of reduced harbour fee, Tuesday I fish with Sasha, Wednesday with Peter and Thursday with both Peter and Sasha before catching the evening plane back to Malaysia. It's been a great previous week, fishing with John, we both had Asp from the Drava, and a great day fishing the canal as you can see from the current POD series...

Angles of Approach

Scott Loudon - Sunday, July 12, 2015

I didn't manage to get to the little stream I talked about last week but I did manage to squeeze a 27g outfit into my travel case! I haven't managed out much this week just with how busy work is but I did enjoy Thursday night standing on an empty golf course at 9pm slinging lines around! A couple weeks ago I mentioned I'd write something on angles of approach so here goes.

steamy windows

t.z. - Thursday, July 9, 2015

Closeness. Being away from you regular comfort zone can be the closest thing you do. Comfort zone as in „indoors“, behind windows and walls. The sky is outside, I am inside … damn. I need to get out - and when I do so I try o be as "close" as possible .....

Fly Fishing for CARP

Bernd Ziesche - Wednesday, July 8, 2015

Many anglers add carp to the group of COARSE fish. The term coarse seems to indicate something negative and rough following my dictionary. My experience is quite different though!

Bushfires and Rivers

Glenda - Tuesday, July 7, 2015

As I sit here in hospital, I wonder if I will ever really feel safe again fishing a river that is surrounded by bush. At the moment the thought frightens me greatly especially if it is during the summer months but more than anything it saddens me that being caught in a bushfire in 2009 and almost losing my life would have such a profound affect on my fishing.

Paul Arden - Monday, July 6, 2015

It's been a while since I've edited video for SLTV - Sexyloops Technical Voodoo - but it's time to have another shot at this. My life right now is on that borderline broke point, as it usually is. Maybe more so than usual because I can't even afford to live in Eastern Europe at the moment! But I don't work, so I think that would explain it. And so I'm going to live in the jungle - and really! I'm going to take up a subsistence sort of lifestyle, eating fish and jungle leaves, fending off snakes and elephants, fighting tigers and scorpions, all of which I'm really looking forward to.

Busy busy

Scott Loudon - Sunday, July 5, 2015

Apologies for missing last week - I hope the page on sight fishing was still useful one week on! It's been a very busy couple weeks for me and about to get a whole lot busier for the next few weeks. July is the busiest month of my working year so it puts a bit of a strain on all other things - especially fly fishing given the time commitment. I'm afraid this post is going to be a bit more life update than article but hey ho.

North Country Flies

Viking Lars - Saturday, July 4, 2015

I've talked about my love for, and interest in, the North Country Flies, Yorkshire flies, spiders many times before on this FP. Fantastic flies, simple, yet difficult to tie "correctly", interesting history and, of course, very effective under the right conditions and used correctly.

t.z. - Thursday, July 2, 2015

Paul was so kind to invite me to write a bit about fly tying and my approach to it. I will try to keep it simple and easy to understand. In my view every flyfisher should make his own flies. It is about understanding the fish and their prey. I mostly fish dry flies because this is what I come across mostly here in Norway. However, the philosophy behind the tying and the techniques involved should be applicable to other flies as well. This article is about how to approach the construction of mayfly imitations. I will be out fishing soon so I needed a few more fluffy things imitating what is hatching right now. E. Vulgata is on the menu these days.

Fly Fishing in the Norwegian Fjords

Bernd Ziesche - Wednesday, July 1, 2015

Fly fishing in the Norwegian Fjords isn’t much popular yet! Why? Actually I haven’t got a clue. The Norwegian Fjords simply offer fly fishing at its best!
