These Islands are part of the Breton National Wildlife Refuge in Louisiana. The islands are shrinking after being battered by severe hurricanes such as Georges in 1998 and Katrina in 2005. They are now uninhabited, and only accessible by boat.\u00a0 We flew into New Orleans and sailed from Pass Christian.<\/p>\n<p>Hurricane Nate hit New Orleans 2017 a few days before we arrived.\u00a0 It travelled at 44km\/hour, and was the fastest moving hurricane ever recorded in the history of the Gulf of Mexico.\u00a0 It had blown out by the time we arrived, however there was a lot of debris in the water, so we elected to sail from Pass Christian in daylight. Chandeleur Island is 42 nm from Pass Christian.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sexyloops.com\/htoc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017-10-25-PHOTO-00000162.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-561\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sexyloops.com\/htoc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017-10-25-PHOTO-00000162-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"840\" height=\"630\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sexyloops.com\/htoc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017-10-25-PHOTO-00000162.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.sexyloops.com\/htoc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017-10-25-PHOTO-00000162-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.sexyloops.com\/htoc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017-10-25-PHOTO-00000162-768x576.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 709px) 85vw, (max-width: 909px) 67vw, (max-width: 1362px) 62vw, 840px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Red Drum.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Red Drum or Redfish (<i>Sciaenops ocellatus) <\/i>is a gamefish of the Atlantic Ocean, on the East Coast of the USA from Massachusetts and into the Gulf of Mexico. They are related to the Black Drum and can interbreed.\u00a0 Red Drum has a distinctive spot, or spots near the tail, that can disappear as the fish matures. They get the name Red Drum because they give a drumming or croaking sound from their swim bladder when agitated. The nice part is that they relax in the net when kept in the water and do not struggle.\u00a0 They recover quickly and are a great catch and release fish. They have a downward mouth and eat snails, oysters, baitfish, worms and crustaceans.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sexyloops.com\/htoc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017-10-25-PHOTO-00000159.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-558\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sexyloops.com\/htoc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017-10-25-PHOTO-00000159-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"840\" height=\"630\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sexyloops.com\/htoc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017-10-25-PHOTO-00000159.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.sexyloops.com\/htoc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017-10-25-PHOTO-00000159-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.sexyloops.com\/htoc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017-10-25-PHOTO-00000159-768x576.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 709px) 85vw, (max-width: 909px) 67vw, (max-width: 1362px) 62vw, 840px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>At Chandeleur Island we were fishing on flats boats, or wading in about 2-3 feet of water, over grass beds.\u00a0 The water was somewhat discolored from hurricane Nate, but we could till sight fish.\u00a0 There were Redfish, Speckled Trout, Ladyfish and Crevalle Jack\u00a0 (a cousin of the GT in the Jack family. It is the thug of the flats).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sexyloops.com\/htoc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017-10-25-PHOTO-00000156.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-555\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sexyloops.com\/htoc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017-10-25-PHOTO-00000156-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"840\" height=\"630\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sexyloops.com\/htoc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017-10-25-PHOTO-00000156.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.sexyloops.com\/htoc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017-10-25-PHOTO-00000156-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.sexyloops.com\/htoc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017-10-25-PHOTO-00000156-768x576.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 709px) 85vw, (max-width: 909px) 67vw, (max-width: 1362px) 62vw, 840px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The weather forecast was for the wind to increase to 20-25knots, so we moved to the Louisiana Marshes.\u00a0 The fishing was different\u2026 we fished bayous, oyster flats and grass beds as this is the drainage gateway for the mighty Mississippi River.\u00a0 You can often see the Redfish working in the grass for crabs and snails. You can often hear them \u201cboofing\u201d like a Barramundi as they inhale their prey.\u00a0 At times, when Redfish are in schools and in feeding mode they will attack surface flies. We did not see any schools. The water was somewhat dirty and the level higher.\u00a0 The fish were probably on holidays, but there were enough to catch and give an account as a respected adversary.\u00a0 The wind blew up as predicted.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sexyloops.com\/htoc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017-10-25-PHOTO-00000160.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-559\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sexyloops.com\/htoc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017-10-25-PHOTO-00000160-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"840\" height=\"630\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sexyloops.com\/htoc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017-10-25-PHOTO-00000160.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.sexyloops.com\/htoc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017-10-25-PHOTO-00000160-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.sexyloops.com\/htoc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017-10-25-PHOTO-00000160-768x576.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 709px) 85vw, (max-width: 909px) 67vw, (max-width: 1362px) 62vw, 840px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>The Hot Torpedo 10<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This is a great rod, and has joined my collection of Hot Torpedoes (4,6,8 and now 10).\u00a0 It has great feel and does not wear you out trying to cast and fish with.\u00a0 I previously had a Sage Xi3 10wt and the difference was considerable. The new\u00a0 Torzite Titanium lines guides \u00a0 are smooth, and made Pauls\u2019 pick and laydown quick cast the cast of choice.\u00a0 I was using a Tarpon Technical 10 WF line, and 7\u2019 leader of 40\/20lb. We saw fish that were easily 30- 40lb and so the 10 WT was an insurance.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sexyloops.com\/htoc\/wp-content\/uploads\/red.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-563\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sexyloops.com\/htoc\/wp-content\/uploads\/red.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"799\" height=\"765\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sexyloops.com\/htoc\/wp-content\/uploads\/red.jpg 799w, https:\/\/www.sexyloops.com\/htoc\/wp-content\/uploads\/red-300x287.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.sexyloops.com\/htoc\/wp-content\/uploads\/red-768x735.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 709px) 85vw, (max-width: 909px) 67vw, (max-width: 984px) 61vw, (max-width: 1362px) 45vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I used black over purple flies, tied with either bunny tail on 1\/0 turned up jig hook (the guides choice), or with ostrich feathers. Land the fly near them and they were catholic in their tastes. They crash the fly and pull hard.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sexyloops.com\/htoc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017-10-25-PHOTO-00000158.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-557\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sexyloops.com\/htoc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017-10-25-PHOTO-00000158-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sexyloops.com\/htoc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017-10-25-PHOTO-00000158.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.sexyloops.com\/htoc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017-10-25-PHOTO-00000158-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 709px) 85vw, (max-width: 909px) 67vw, (max-width: 984px) 61vw, (max-width: 1362px) 45vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Red Drum are an exciting gamefish for sight fishing.\u00a0 The Bull Red was caught conventionally.
