Sidewind (on-shoulder)

Perhaps not emphasised enough in this particular module, but present throughout the complete class, is the high degree of importance in being able to cast at all wind angles. It would not be an overstatement to suggest that you should spend half your practise time casting using the opposite shoulder. Of course no-one actually does this, but the importance of being able to cast competently using both shoulders can not be overstated and you should spend a significant amount of your practise time using the wind unfavourably.

Being able to cast using your non-dominant hand is useful. If you can’t then I would humbly suggest that you need to learn to make all the other casting strokes to a high level of ability. Being able to deliver both accurately – as well as at distance – utilising a “backcast” is a very important skill.

It’s an exploration. Bring a fly rod. Designed for you by Paul Arden.

PS Lasse Karlsson is one of my crazy friends who tries to out-cast me with his left hand! 🙂
