Ronan's report

Friday 3rd October, 2014

Conservationists are celebrating the securing of a scenic southern Alberta land parcel that's the largest set-aside of its kind in the province's history.

The Waldron Ranch about 80 km southwest of Calgary covers 12,300 hectares of rolling grassland and timber and will be the Nature Conservancy of Canada's second-largest parcel of preserved land.

A group of 70 ranchers pushed the idea to conserve their land from subdivision, cultivation and drainage that'll be accessible to hikers.

Those ranchers retain grazing rights to the land, whose preservation is being purchased for $37.5 million.

The move's greatest impact will be maintaining a wildlife corridor between the Porcupine Hills to its east and the Whaleback region and the Rocky Mountains' Livingston Range, said Bob Demulder of the Nature Conservancy of Canada (NCC).

"It's more about allowing iconic species like bear and elk to move between the habitat" said Demulder.

"It's those ranchers saying 'we want to be part of a future that leaves large tracts of land intact.'"

The conservation easement also protects increasingly rare pockets of fescue grassland, he added.

Hikers will be able to walk the property as long as they close gates behind them, though hunters will still need to garner permission.

The province kicked in $12 million, Ottawa another $4 million for the land that swoops down south of Longview down to the banks of the Oldman River.

"From that hill south of Longview, it's everything you see down to the Oldman River, where you can fish," said Demulder.

The cooperation between the ranchers and NCC, he said, shows environmental protection needn't be entirely dependent on government decree.

"It's just another way for conservation to happen - people think the only way is to create a new park but people can make it happen" said Demulder.

Signage marking Waldron ranch for the public could be erected along Hwy. 22 which borders it, he said.

Unlike Glenbow Ranch Provincial Park just west of Calgary which also hosts ranching, the Waldron area won't have developed public infrastructure

ACTUAL AUSTRALIAN COURT DOCKET 12659 --- CASE OF THE PREGNANT LADY?

A lady about 8 months pregnant got on a bus. She noticed the man opposite her was smiling at her. She immediately moved to another seat. This time the smile turned into a grin, so she moved again. The man seemed more amused. When on the fourth move, the man burst out laughing, she complained to the driver and he had the man arrested.

The case came up in court.

The judge asked the man (about 20 years old) what he had to say for himself.

The man replied, 'Well your Honor, it was like this, when the lady got on the bus, I couldn't help but notice her condition. She sat down under a sign that said, 'The Double Mint Twins are coming' and I grinned. Then she moved and sat under a sign that said, 'Logan's Liniment will reduce the swelling,' and I had to smile. Then she placed herself under a deodorant sign that said, 'William's Big Stick Did the Trick,' and I could hardly contain myself. But, Your Honor, when She moved the fourth time and sat under a sign that said, 'Goodyear Rubber could have prevented this Accident'... I just lost it.'

'CASE DISMISSED!!'
