Ronan's report

Wednesday 10 September, 2014

During the past 10 days Alex, I and some of our students have been chasing Sea trouts (mainly) and mullets. It again proved to be a fine target to catch just one nice Sea trout during a whole week for a total beginner. Fly fishing the coast (Baltic sea) that is.

I remember pretty well when I started to fly fish for Sea trout about 25 years ago, I lost more than 50% of my hook ups. Furthermore I didn't even hook up with a serious percentage of Sea trout just following my fly for some meters instead. So it was fair to assume I managed to catch maybe 10-20% of what I catch today. Last week instead I landed 14 Sea trout and lost one. When I am teaching beginners I always tell them one Sea trout during a week is a serious target. Everything on top would be a bonus, which has been proved to be spot-on often.

Last week our students managed to catch several smaller Sea trout upto 45cm. And then they lost 4 or 5 Sea trout well over 50cm as well. So all in all we had a great week on Sea trout. Mullets were pretty hard to find instead. Most of them have already left heading back to the Northern Sea. Nobody knows for sure, but I guess they migrate all the way down to France and or Spain.

This week now Alex is teaching another student of ours to fly fish for Sea trout and I am fishing in front of a professional cameraman in order to create a small video about coastal Sea trout fishing. In the evening I am learning more about editing videos. Having said that there should come quite some vids soon since I have lots of fly fishing stuff to be edited on my computer! :)

I wish all of you a joyfull and catchy week as well!

All my best

Bernd
