Ronan's report

Saturday September 6th, 2014

Today, in a few hours, I'm attending a conference on the future for "recreational fishing" in Denmark.

The conference has been called by none less than the secretary of food and consumption in Denmark. The secretary has asked for visions and ideas for the future, and as such of course the conference holds promise of lots of hot air and politician-talk.

But I do think the secretary's intentions are honest and real, because there's been a few cases lately that have opened politician's eye to the value of recreational fishing - both in terms of pure economics and environment, but also reaching into social life in the fishing clubs and further.

Most notably the case I wrote about a year or so ago, where local volunteers actually succeeded in pushing through a new declaration for a specific inlet, where netting was catching unreasonable large amount of the sea trout.

We've also seen a couple of reports that estimate the value of recreational fishing in Denmark - lots of zeros!!! And I believe that has also caught the eye of the political establishment.

And it's high time too - fish populations are under high pressure. It's hard (of not impossible) to find a wild population of brown trout that are larger than 10 inches, and grayling were almost eradicated by cormorant during the last 5 years (populations are slowly increasing again). Thankfully, several rivers now have healthy populations of self-reproducing sea trout, which are in fact the result of both river restoration and targeted stocking of smolt.

So I hope for a good conference with a positive spirit and lots of good ideas and visions for the secretary!

(Old, reused PoD - as you can see from the text, trout fishing has been suffering for quite a few years...)

Have a great weekend!

Lars
