Ronan's report

Tuesday 5th August, 2014

I've been having a lot of fun recently training for the up-coming World Championships in Norway next week. I switched stance about ten days ago, which came as a bit of a surprise, but while casting with the Lumi-lines I came to the conclusion that there were some excellent reasons to do so. Ever since then I've been relearning the stroke. It's a great stroke when you really hook it up. I still haven't been measuring my casts, but I don't really think that's important at the moment. I'm much more interested in loops, carry, consistency and I'm currently working on the launch! I might run out a tape today.

Every time I go out I learn something new which is excellent. Of course most of it I already knew at some point, and have since forgotten! But some of it is genuinely new. I was casting my best some six or seven years ago when I set the British 5-weight record and I'm hoping to be back at that standard again or better. I'm bigger now - so that should help. I just hope I don't step off the platform.

I've also been playing around with the 27 gram Sea Trout distance. That's an interesting beast! I'm still not really sure what I want to be doing there. I'm bothered by the fact that most of the time I cast further with no effort. However there was one session, where I managed to find a groove hitting the thing and it went like a rocket. However I haven't managed to do this again since! And I need to do it a few more times to work out how to do it every time.

And finally I've been playing with the accuracy. I think my problem here is that I've competed in very few accuracy competitions. So much so that in the last two WCs I have actually wanted not to get to the finals, because I knew that I would embarrass myself if I did! This time however, I think it would be nice to get to the finals. I'd really like to train this over water but don't have the opportunity, but I can see that in the future I'm really going to enjoy this event - especially after I've dug a pond!

So I'm really looking forward to this competition. I just hope we all get the same conditions and that we see some fantastic casting.

Fingers crossed I get my new passport soon, then I can drive back to Hungary on Saturday. It's going to be a long drive this time because I'm trailering down a ride-on lawnmower! Top speed 60 mph through Germany FFS.

Cheers,
Paul
