Ronan's report

Tuesday 27th May, 2014

You know it's summer here in Eastern Europe because all the men start wearing speedos for gardening, plumbing and roadside digging. That and there are mosquitoes. Mosquitoes are not something I've ever really gotten used to, probably because we don't have them anywhere in the UK in large numbers. We have midges in Scotland but they're tiny and only appear for short periods around low light. Blood sucking hoards of mosquitoes - especially during the day - is unknown.

That however, doesn't apply to the rest of the world where mosquitoes have been successfully surviving for the last 200 million years. I'm just grateful they don't carry diseases here in Hungary. The same cannot be said about ticks. Ticks here can stick you in hospital for weeks and even kill you. 70% for the ticks around Latohegy carry diseases and this year there are many more than usual because of the mild winter. I haven't been bitten by a tick so far this year, but my cat has been bitten by three million of them.

Ticks only appear during Spring and the first half of summer. Then they turn in to Horseflies. Horseflies here in Hungary grow the size of small birds and can leave you seriously injured with just one bite. Two of them can actually carry a small child. Only the strong survive.

And then there are the vampire women. Generally appearing in miniskirts any time from the beginning of May to the end of September, they hunt in packs and can completely devour a man in less than 15 seconds. It's generally considered a good way to go.

Off for a cast...

Cheers,
Paul
