Ronan's report

Tuesday 06 May, 2014

May 1st, May day, that under-appreciated festival of the northern hemisphere. Walpurgis Night, the festival of Flora, Beltane. Associated with the beginning of summer, in the past this day was celebrated with parties, and flowers, drink and fire.

It's been a cold long winter, and the first of May was warm and sunny, temperatures reaching 20 degrees. It was the perfect day to be be on a river. I spent the morning working on a small creek, anticipation killing me. Stoneflies, BWO, March browns, Beltane brought the bugs!

As my workday came to an end, the weather brought the snow melts and the rivers became very dirty. With such a beautiful day, I was still happy and decided to take a drive to a nearby lake that is known to have nice brown trout cruising the shallows and lake trout in the deep.

The location I chose to visit was a fitting place for Beltane. While I didn't hold a bonfire, the location has been a gathering place for the local community for over a century- old by Albertan standards! In the 1930's a dance hall was built along with a dock and a breakwater to protect the small cove. It was an important place in the area, particularly before televisions, video games, and other electronic entertainments. It was the perfect place to celebrate a spring day.

When I arrived I geared up with intention to walk along the remains of the breakwater out to extend my reach into deeper water. The path is narrow but shallow and easy to follow when the wind isn't whipping the water into whitecaps.

A truck pulled up as I walked down to the shore. Two kids ran out, one of them throwing off his shirt and jumping into the snowmelt lake. I could hear the scream across the bay as the contact with water was made. Apparently the young in the area still have Beltane rights-of-passage.

Beltane didn't bring trout to hand for me, although I hooked something deep that pulled strong before it got free. Maybe trout next time...

I hope that Beltane brings you all a good harvest at the Scottish meet,
Harps
