Ronan's report

Tuesday 15 April, 2014

This past weekend was another trip to a big river down in Montana.

I'd first like to give a shout out to the folks at the Trout Shop in Craig, for hosting our fly fishing club. The food was incredible, the knowledge or the river unsurpassed.

My only complaint is that they didn't reserve the right weather for our trip... we were supposed to have the warm calm sunny day with moments of cloud cover to encourage fish to come out. Instead we got strong headwinds, below freezing temperatures and white-out snow conditions! Rowing was an interesting challenge for the inexperienced (myself) and the experienced alike.

Even in those cold conditions, midge clusters were enticing the occasional trout to the surface and swung streamers were pulling them from depths. Admittedly, most of the trout caught by the group were on nymphs. Trout need to eat, and it is easier to eat from the water column where they rest- but it certainly isn't as fun for the angler.

One of the great things about Montana's trout rivers is the great fishing access management by the government that ensures the public, resident of Montana or not, can fish the remarkable trout! I wish every government and fisheries managers were as forward thinking when it comes to fisheries management.

Dreaming of the next trip south,
