Ronan's report

Friday January 31, 2013

I have been fly fishing a long time, since I was just over 8 years old, I am now 51 years old, I was not concerned when I was young say like 50 years old, but now! Now that I think about it, I went from a simple cane pole and twine with a small wet fly, to a 15 pound back pack, a 20 pound vest and damn near every cheap gadget known to fly fishers and astronauts!

I have zippers in my waders (I recommend those) and neoprene in my socks, underwear that won't smell even if I do, and I even have a modified rod tube made into a humidor for my cigars (thanks Tiana SB).

I sometimes carry over 1500 flies and a survival kit that rivals an ambulance. I have a SPOT that will tell people where I am even when I don't know.

But I don't want to live the complicated life any more, so I will simplify and plan on doing so this season. I no longer fear a fishbourne conspiracy that means I have to carry five of every fly known to catch fish, nor carry every gadget known invented to make my trip easier, even if it kills me. I don't need 15 spools of tippet and leader, a couple of spools of flouro/mono will do.

I am heading out Tuesday and then again Wednesday and will test my theory of inspired simplicity...
