Ronan's report

Wednesday 28 August, 2013

15 years ago I started to teach fly casting. At that time there wasn't too much interest in fly casting lessons in Germany. Along the Baltic coast, where I mostly was fishing, most coastal fly fishermen never had participated in any lesson at all.

Then the internet more and more became a leading ressource for fly casting knowledge. Especially internet forums gained a lot of members in almost no time. Today I find a lot of fly fishing beginners asking questions around fly fishing (and how to get started) in all fly fishing forums. And here fly casting beginners usually get the link to fly casting schools and they mostly will be told to have a huge advantage in booking a fly casting lesson in order to have a proper start into fly casting and fly fishing as well.

These days I indeed meet a much higher percentage of fly fishermen around the Baltic sea, who have participated in a fly casting lesson (or in some lessons), than it was 15 years ago. Today I was asking myself how big the interest might be in other countries?

So I had a look at the (I think) leading fly fishing forums for different countries and made a sheet representing the quantity of threads and postings around fly casting vs. the number of members. Interesting results! You may have a closer look at the numbers (they are rounded and not totally precise) in the pic of the day section.

No doubt Sexyloops is the leading place for fly casting discussions worldwide. Sexyloops represents the largest number of threads and postings and at the same time it has (and had) the lowest number of members. One thing I soon realized during my little research: In all forums the fly tying section holds a much higher number of threads and postings, BUT has much less views! It seems to me like in all forums a lot of fly fishermen are still a bit shy to ask questions and enter the discussions around fly casting. I think it is very fair to say this really matches especially for Sexyloops!

And yes, it is also fair to say: Sexyloops produces the largest threads (most postings per thread) of all forums. Maybe this is one of the reasons why quite some fly fishermen prefer to READ this forum instead of participating.

After all am really happy, that we have the possibilty to spread the information about fly casting as we have it today. It's very helpful for those who want to learn and those who want to teach as well. Personally I want both!

How big is the interest in getting fly casting lessons and/or having discussions about it in your country?

All my best

Bernd
