Ronan's report

Tuesday 11 December, 2012

Last week was probably the last fishing of the season with temperatures marginally above freezing. Of course, I seem to say that every week and the forecast is indicating near freezing temperatures which are fine for fishing.

This last trip out was great, the sun was shining, the wind was absent, and the fish were hungry! I'm not sure what it is, but a day like that makes you happy for the week. Each flash of silver was like a credit against future stress, each tug on the line a smile in the bank for a gloomy day.

Using a 10'6 switch rod, I swung a streamer, took a step and swung again. In a couple of hours half a dozen solid rainbows were brought to my broken Mclean net, each bringing an ear to ear grin. This wasn't steelhead fishing, but it was sunny and full of strong fish.

As this week drags on, closer to the dismantling of federal government protection of Alberta's fish habitat, I need all the smiles I can get. Every time a phone line is cut (they cut my office phone this week) I think of the bright sides of O. mykiss. Every ignored (risk-managed) file drives me to think of the head shakes of a hooked fish. These memories get me through the day.

My message to you is to go out and do something that makes you smile (or stay in and do something that makes you smile)! I know I am going to take every opportunity I get.
