Ronan's report

Friday, 07 December 2012

Ok now… I find myself in a very difficult position. My son is four and a half years old and my daughter turned two in August. Needless to say, school is a necessity for both. 2013 will mark the third year in school for my son, and the first for my daughter. The difficulty is that (apart from choosing the most appropriate school), is that their combined school fees for one year will be more than the total fees for my six years at university.

Well, we cannot really compromise education for anyone and at any level. I suppose that it is pretty much the same with our fishing when we are starting out. We cannot compromise our learning by not spending money to afford us the time on the water.

I have never tried to calculate my school fees. To be honest I am actually scared to tally up the costs. This will include travelling fees for approximately 60kms round trip at a minimum of five times per week for a year, all tackle costs, and petrol costs for boat trips. Whatever this works out to, this is a LOT! I suppose the more painful aspect of my first year of fishing with all of this effort, was just four fish.

The big question is whether it was worth it? I recall that at the end of the first year, I had to make a decision – stop fishing as this was a waste of my time and effort, or persevere as I had spent a small fortune as a student (approximately $120) to buy a complete outfit. As you have guessed, I chose to persevere and one of the benefits (among many), is that I now get to fish in wonderful destinations around the world and of course, get to write weekly on this site. So yes, that perseverance was worth it.

Simply put, the school fees were worth it. I can only hope for all other fly fishing enthusiasts out there that you did not have to spend as much as I did to really start enjoying the sport. An boy, what an awesome sport!

Tight lines and screaming reels.
