Ronan's report

Friday 30 November, 2012

Apologies for the late update. Now onto the topic. I was surprised recently to discover an Underground Fishing Group. I found this very weird in that personally, I believed that fly fishermen shared their knowledge and info willingly.

Firstly, I needed to understand what was meant by “underground”. Wikipedia describes an underground movement as “A resistance movement is a group or collection of individual groups, dedicated to opposing an invader in an occupied country or the government of a sovereign state”. Wikipedia goes on to explain that these groups achieve their objectives through violent and non-violent means. Wow, this puts a different spin on fishing which I consider a passive sport.

Anyways, knowing the calibre of fly anglers we have in South Africa, I very much doubt that they are of the violent type.

The point however remains that there is an underground group. They are a group of guys who do not share information widely. This includes tactics, flies, venues, etc. Why would guys do this?

There could be many reasons. One is simply a lack of confidence in them catching anything so they stay “silent”. The more probable reason is sadly silly online forums where personal opinions and contributions are not valued, thus making the angler stick to himself or his group only.

I wondered if I have ever been underground? Probably not, but there have been occasions when my fishing partners and I spent many hours testing and cracking certain destinations and habitats, and did not share this info with anybody. I justified this behaviour with the fact that we had put in the long hours so why should others cramp our space preventing us from reaping the success of our hours. Perhaps this was my version of being underground??

Anyways, I realised that I am always willing to share advise and tactics, but am more conservative in terms of sharing destinations/venues. I reserve this info for a more select group of people in South Africa. Perhaps you share the same opinion.

Tight lines and screaming reels.
