Looks like I'm on strike again! Yesterday I talked about streamer fishing (aka "lure bashing") for big Gacka trout which is obviously the kiss of death for any technique and yesterday it failed quite spectacularly. However not all was lost because there was a rise of sorts in the evening to sedges. Not the sort of dramatic rise one would hope for at the end of the day, but fish were on the surface. And while a couple of fish took the fly static, what they really wanted was it skated. The way to skate flies effectively, I find, is to first cast down and across with an upstream reach mend. If I don't do this the fly movement starts very slow and finishes too fast! I then work the fly with the rod tip and line hand. I want the fly to move erratically and make this happen by shaking the rod tip in an elevated position. When I first started skating sedges on the Fiordland Waiau in NZ, I had no idea how to hook the fish and thought you had to give them line and strike late. This is exactly the wrong thing to do. On a fast take you strike, or let the fish strike for you, and on a slow take just keep retrieving until you feel the fish. I find it really important to sink the leader, just as when fishing dries static or dead drift. Fortunately the first pull sinks even the most stubborn leader. So, I'm still here in Croatia. Lasse and Akos have left for Hungary. I'm here for the weekend - Peter and another friend and joining me, as well as Sasha and Milan. The next two days for me are catching up with emails (a never-ending story), running up a local hill and cycling, and fishing in the evening. Cheers, Paul.
