Saturday November 19th 2011 As I told a few weeks back, my off season tying began with tying late-season flies instead of the early-season flies I'm going to need in a few months. And I never do seem to get around to that fill-the-box-with-all-the-flies-I'll-need-through-the-season anyway. I drift around, try new ideas for this and that, see a Davie McPhail video and get inspired from that and lately, I've been tying North Country Spiders. I'm sure what it is about these small, discrete, ultra simple flies. I became fascinated with them very early on in my "flyfishing life". The fishing style is simple yet effective, and they are one of my standard approaches to a river where there's little or no surface activity, and even during a hatch, they sometimes do the trick. I tie an fish a number of the classics, like the Waterhen Bloa in the PoD, which is a favorite for me as well as many, many other anglers. Another one I really like is the Winter Brown.
I know lots of flyfishermen fish these flies more or less throughout the season, and so do I, but I mainly use them in the summer months (June-August). I wonder when I'll get around to tying the flies I'll need in a month? Have a great weekend! Lars
