Ronan's report

Thursday 3rd November, 2011

I've got a big ol' crush on rainbows at the moment. It was a good couple years there when I was after the browns but by some twist this year has been all about the rainbows. Unlike the years before, the water or method has or luck has put them on the hook more. A lot of brain grinding hasn't really put it together yet. It's a big water year, so perhaps they've been more active and successful in the stronger flows. Really hard to confirm that one. Regardless, they've been fit and strong with great proportions. Unlike some of the larger big head browns, nothing snakey or sway backed. It's been great, and I'm happy to see the hard flash of silver as they boil in the surface under a high sun.

Going through a streamer experimental period. How does everyone like run their streamers? Tubes? Trailer hooks? Trailer hooks looped on? Straight and simple? With the bigger commitment it takes to tie them (more material and more time), failed experiments are feeling especially costly. Already have a box that I just don't like the look of and worse... I don't feel confident in. Yet I still have a hard time throwing away flies. A couple zip locks full of junk flies in the cabinet attest to my sentimental nature, but maybe it's just wrong to keep these disproportionate cheap-hooked unfishy flies. A bonfire might be appropriate.
