Ronan's report

Thursday 18th August, 2011

I'm beat! Sore feet to red cheeks, from fog and low tide up past sun and high tide, I've been out in the surf in a marathon pillow fight with Poseidon. BTW, he's a dirty fighter and will take a nut shot if you turn around unaware at the wrong moment. My hat's off to the surf fishers who can stand up to those waves day and out. Not even really big surf, just breaking on the hip with occasional swells up to your armpit every 12 seconds all day long... Yes, my beard still tastes like saltwater.

I'm on a family holiday down to the old capital of Alta California (Northern California), Monterey. Went past Diablo Grande, went past San Sexyloops, and are now here by the beach where a huge crack in the continental shelf funnels the deep Pacific right up to shore. The locals call it a "fault", but being a casting instructor and not wanting to make anyone feel bad (and just be honest with them), maybe we should call it an unexpected break in form.

So we only caught one little crab, no perch, no salmon, steelhead, halibut, stripers or anything else besides kelp. But there's always tomorrow! OK, I'm on the run! Actually I just have to go attend to a margarita! Cheers!
