Ronan's report

Friday 5th August, 2011

I have started fishing with my oldest son again, and this has brought on a lot of fond memories. I am sure now that Ray was visiting with them ) The back story to this still infuriates me, Ray Jr is so much like me it is not funny. He loves to travel and be on the move, which was all changed in 2005 while camping in BC. He was jumped while sleeping in his tent, the guy that did it thought that Ray Jr was in the tent with the guys girlfriend, a shitty mistaken identity, changed my sons life for ever, Ray suffered a broken jaw in two places and brain damage, swelling of some type. The brain damage has caused moderate personality changes. We, his Mom and I would have never known of this but for the fact Ray Jr left the hospital, just got up and left did not sign out did not take his personal belongings, the Dr, found our Phone # in Ray’s stuff and called to let us know what Ray did . The next time Ray surfaced was 2009, for a short time we had contact and then he was gone again. I did some training in Edmonton in 2010 and found Ray again, this time I convinced him to come home to Lethbridge with me. We have gotten him Cleaned up and seeing Doctors and taking meds. We may never fully have our Happy Ray back, but are getting closer. Life has a way of happening while we are making plans, so I am going back to work part time, buying a larger home, and fishing with my oldest son, so all in all life is an adventure. A small selfish part of me is mad because I know that Ray Jr used to fly fish but now he is most comfortable with a spinning rod, and all my lessons about C&R and resource conservation, seem to have been lost. I look forward to the challenge of instilling that information again. The other evening at an in town lake, Ray was saying he did not think he deserved to catch a fish, not 3 minutes later he had a nice hammer handle pike to the net. I did not think the Fish Gods or Fish Fairies, cared about such urban waters, but it was too much to be just a coincidence. Fishing does heal it is the one true natural medicine, the one true natural healer, Ray Jr was more animated and happy, alive then I had seen him in a hellofa long time.

Please enjoy this touching tale of Just stay, I am sure that Andy will approve . From someone who has lost a parent and barely knows his father, my prayers and thoughts are with you Andy.

Just Stay

A nurse took the tired, anxious serviceman to the bedside.

"Your son is here," she said to the old man.

She had to repeat the words several times before the patient's eyes opened.

Heavily sedated because of the pain of his heart attack, he dimly saw the young uniformed Marine standing outside the oxygen tent. He reached out his hand. The Marine wrapped his toughened fingers around the old man's limp ones, squeezing a message of love and encouragement.

The nurse brought a chair so that the Marine could sit beside the bed. All through the night the young Marine sat there in the poorly lighted ward, holding the old man's hand and offering him words of love and strength. Occasionally, the nurse suggested that the Marine move away and rest awhile.

He refused. Whenever the nurse came into the ward, the Marine was oblivious of her and of the night noises of the hospital - the clanking of the oxygen tank, the laughter of the night staff members exchanging greetings, the cries and moans of the other patients. Now and then she heard him say a few gentle words. The dying man said nothing, only held tightly to his son all through the night.

Along towards dawn, the old man died. The Marine released the now lifeless hand he had been holding and went to tell the nurse. While she did what she had to do, he waited.

Finally, she returned. She started to offer words of sympathy, but the Marine interrupted her.

"Who was that man?" he asked.

The nurse was startled, "He was your father," she answered.

"No, he wasn't," the Marine replied. "I never saw him before in my life."

"Then why didn't you say something when I took you to him?"

"I knew right away there had been a mistake, but I also knew he needed his son, and his son just wasn't here.

When I realized that he was too sick to tell whether or not I was his son, knowing how much he needed me, I stayed."

I came here tonight to find a Mr. William Grey.

His son was Killed in Iraq today, and I was sent to inform him. What was this Gentleman's Name?

The Nurse with tears in her eyes answered,

Mr. William Grey.............

The next time someone needs you ... just be there. Stay.

(I love this line)
