Ronan's report

Tuesday May 31st 2011

I think an under-rated part about fly-fishing is the off river stuff, the time spent with friends talking about the sport, and the next greatest technologies, the past biggest fish, and everything else that makes it exciting. A conclave is a brilliant place to experience that.
This past weekend was the local fly fishing club's annual conclave and banquet. It was also our chance to host the 3rd Fly Fishing Film Tour.

As expected, the Chinook Waters Fly Fishing Club conclave was a great time. Many folks turned up to chat about fishing, get casting lessons from FFF certified Brian Niska, and to take in the fly tying competition (I only got third).

It is great to be reminded how enjoyable it is to just cast with no fish to fool or to tie with a group of peers rather than trout judging you on creativity, skill, and speed. Much different than the ugly and cheap flies on short meandering casts that I send to trout hiding in willows.

The casting portion would have lasted longer, had it not been preceded by a funnel cloud, hail, and lightning, then followed by another evil looking sky. Being chased inside had it's advantages, though. The beer was cold, the fish talk flowed freely, and the Hoochies were flying.

If you've never experienced a hoochie toss competition, you'll just have to come to Lethbridge for next year's conclave!
