Ronan's report

Saturday January 1st 2011

Happy NewYear to everyone. I hope you all entered 2011 safely and in good form!

The Danish rivers are all closed (fence months), and the salt is closed as well (but that doesn't keep me off (or - more to the point - away from) the water.

Should you happen to live near a river with riverrun seatrout or salmon, now's the time to take a walk along a smaller tributary, look for the shallow glides and runs. This is where salmon and seatrout spawn - if you're careful you can get very close to big fish digging their spawning pits or even catch them in the act. Seatrout are a lot more fun to watch than salmon since even very big fish spawn in aliment no water in the smallest becks and brooks. But tread carefully and don't spook the fish - they're trying to secure future generations!

With the winter we're having here in Denmark, the landscapes surrounding the rivers are incredibly beautiful, and there's something magical about the steaming river slowly meandering through a white landscape. A river in this setting draws me as much as it does when the mayflies are hatching or the salmon running (OK, maybe not quite, but almost).

It's a wonderful way of spending the winter days in wait of the season to come. And being on the river, or on the beach, experiencing this part of its natural cycle is, for me, also a part of being a flyfisher.

Here's to 2011 and the hope of it becoming a wonderful, flyfishing year!
