Ronan's report

Tuesday September 28th, 2010

I hit the road running after my trip to the UK and went right to a training session in Kananaskis. For the record, Dr. Bob Newbury is my hero. His life has been dedicated to stream restorations that are better for fish and based on natural systems. 30 years of successful restoration projects is a great legacy to have.

That type of work really got me thinking about what I do to protect fish, and what I don't do. I'm happy with my job, with the exception of all the bureaucracy BS that I have to put up with, but I'm disappointed that there isn't any drive, within many of the staff I work with and in the department, to make things better. Whether it is education or restoration, we miss opportunities to do good ever day. I plan on changing that... I'm starting with a big box of "helping fish habitat" colouring books that I'm putting in my truck right now. Start with young and the parents will follow.

Anyways, it's been a great week here in Alberta. First decent snow of the year, furnace has been running none stop, but the beaver ponds are full of brookies, and the mayflies and caddis are thick. Tuesday I'm on course again, preparing to teach staff about habitat assessments, and Sunday I head to Yellowstone. You'll hear no complaints from me!

Turning a new leaf...
